Expanding Bureaucratic Control Over Charter Schools and Local Education Agencies
2025 - California State Assembly
Conservatives Oppose
Description
This bill creates an Office of the Education Inspector General to impose new audits, oversight, and regulations on charter schools and local education agencies, while increasing government involvement in their funding, operations, and contracting processes. It adds excessive reporting requirements and mandates for data systems and contractor background checks, which could burden school choice advocates and limit flexibility for charter schools. CPAC opposed this bill. The House passed this bill on 2025-06-05 by a vote of 43-25. The bill did not become law.
